A black-and-white photograph of Emmett Ashford and fellow umpires Cece Carlucci and Mickey Hanich after Ashford was hired by the American League as the first black umpire in 1965. The image caption below (not shown) reads, "4/24  Emmett Ashford, 36, Los Angeles, (L), first Negro umpire in organized baseball gets a few pointers on rubbing down baseballs from Senior Umpire Cece Carlucci (C) as Umpire Mickey Hanich (R) looks on. Ashford, considered one of the best arbiters in Pacific Coast League, was a postal clerk for 15 years before becoming a full time umpire."
