Wagon Tongue bat

Date1892
DescriptionNatural stain wooden bat with "Pat. Appd For / Spalding / Trade Mark / No. 000" in the center of the barrel and "Wagon-Tongue" engraved near the end of the barrel. The knob, handle and taper are stained darker than the barrel.
Bio/Historical NoteBaseball bats in the 19th century were heavier and less tapered than those of today, but otherwise remarkably similar. This Spalding Wagon Tongue brand bat, made from seasoned second-growth ash, was named after the older practice of making baseball bats from a covered wagon's tongue.
