A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) and states, "Manager and 'Doctor Mack' Connie Mack, who died Feb. 8 at 93 was a confident manager of the Philadelphia Athletics back in 1930 on the eve of the opening game of the World Series between his team and the St. Louis Cardinals. At right, Connie is shown in cap and gown as he received an honorary degree of Doctor of Physical Education from Pennsylvania Military College in 1936." Mack's Athletics won the 1930 World Series.
