Connie Mack and President Harry Truman photograph, 1955 April 12

Date1955 April 12
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Connie Mack, left, captured shaking hands with former President Harry Truman. The caption on the back of the photograph (not shown) states, "To the thousands of fans who turned out for the double-opening of Kansas City's American League baseball season April 12th and 13th, it probably appeared as if the park had been sitting there waiting for the season to start. But the hundreds of engineers, contractors and workmen who battled around the clock getting the huge stadium ready sighed with relief as they saw the first ball pitched. In a matter of weeks they had changed a minor-league grandstand into a major-league plant. Two famous fans who enjoyed the comforts and conveniences provided for them are shown here on opening day. Venerable Connie Mack, founder of the Athletics, is greeted by former President Harry S.Truman. The park was 'seated' by American Seating Company, Grand Rapids, Michigan, which met a tight schedule by turning out 17,000 stadium chairs for the Kansas City plant. 'Body contoured' for comfort, the spacious chairs have stout, cast-iron standards, backs and seats of steam-bent hardwood, and enamel finishes, to make them stand up to the rigors of weather and enthusiastic baseball fans." Based on the caption this photograph was taken on April 12, 1955.
