DescriptionMedium stain wooden base supporting a wooden bat with a section of the barrel carved out to hold a champagne bottle. Bottle is green glass with a gold foil wrapper still affixed to the top with metal wiring. Bottle is situated in a cream-colored macramé cover. A navy and wine-colored ribbon is tied to the macramé at the neck of the bottle. A gold-colored engraved plate is affixed to the base below the bottle, "Christening Bottle / S.S. Lou Gehrig / Mrs. Christine Gehrig / Mother of the Late Lou Gehrig / Sponsor / Launched January 17, 1943 / South Portland Ship Building Corporation / West Yard South Portland Maine."
Bio/Historical NoteThe christening bottle used for the S.S. Lou Gehrig. The S.S. Lou Gehrig, which was a Liberty Ship, launched January 17, 1943 in South Portland, Maine. Gehrig's mother Christine used the specially crafted bat/champagne bottle to christen the ship.
