DescriptionInterview of Nelson Briles conducted by the St. Louis Cardinals in St. Louis, Missouri in 1967 or 1968. Content of the interview includes: Side One -- Track 1 - On being a starting pitcher, being protected in 1965 so that he wouldn't be drafted by other ball clubs; when he joined the club, he was in the bullpen, but got a start late in September, his first start was against the Dodgers and Sandy Koufax, he got beat 1-0; but his next start, he won 19-8, so poetic justice in the game; in 1966 he was a starter for a while but didn't do well so he went back to the bullpen; when Bob Gibson was hurt this year, he got a chance to be part of the rotation (00:00:00 to 00:01:22) Track 2 - Grateful for the support of the St. Louis fans, give 100% to further the St. Louis cause and win more pennants, the more pennants to Cardinals win, the more money he makes (00:01:22 to 00:01:54.5) Track 3 - (Repeating point about Sandy Koufax, with greater detail) His first game as a starting pitcher was against Sandy Koufax; his first start in the Major Leagues was in 1965 when I came up against the Los Angeles Dodgers when they were shooting for a pennant; his opponent was Sandy Koufax, so things weren't looking good for him on his first side; came out on the short end, and Koufax beat him 1-0, one of the better ball games he has pitched; don't mind losing to a great competitor as he was, just a shame his career was cut short (00:01:54.5 to 00:03:51.5)
