Babe Ruth Signing Autograph as Red Cross Volunteer photograph

Date1944 March 04
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Babe Ruth volunteering and signing an autograph surrounded by four unidentified children. The caption (not shown) reads "As his reply to the report that Japs in New Guinea charged Marine lines screaming 'to hell with Babe Ruth', the beloved baseball figure has enrolled as a volunteer Red Cross block canvasser in Manhattan. Interrupted as he makes his house-to-house calls by young admirers who clamor for his autograph, the 'Bambino' stops to scrawl his signature on baseballs, mits and books for the small fry." An armband that reads "1944 Red Cross Volunteer" is visible on Ruth's left sleeve.
