DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of the crowd for Babe Ruth's funeral. The caption (not shown) reads "Crowds of mourning fans jam the the sidewalks to watch the funeral procession for Babe Ruth as it moves toward St. Patrick's Cathedral, where Francis Cardinal Spellman recited a solemn requiem mass for the late home run king on August 19th. In addition to limousines [limousines] bearing the baseball idol's immediate family and close friends, there was a long line of private cars, belonging to Ruth's fans, in the procession. Mrs. Ruth requested that the funeral service and the procession be open to anyone who wished to attend."
