Biography06/21/2007| Harcourt was a United States publishing firm that specialized in nonfiction for adults and children. The company was based in San Francisco, Orlando, and New York. The World Book Company was founded in 1905 in Manila and published English-language education materials for schools in the Philippines. The company moved to New York and began a test publishing. Alfred Harcourt, Donald Brace, and editor Will D. Howe in 1919 started the publishing company Harcourt, Brace & Howe. In 1921 Howe left the company which became Harcourt, Brace & Company. Harcourt, Brace & World was active in 1931 if not previously. In 1954 William Jovanovich became president, 1960 he took the company public and merged Harcourt Brace & Company with World Book Company to create Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc. In 1970, the company was known as Harcourt Brace Jovanovich with Jovanovich as chairman. In 1991 General Cinema acquired HBJ. In 1993 renamed itself to Harcourt General and made "Harcourt Brace & Company" the name of its publishing division. in 1991 publishing division's name was changed to Harcourt, Inc. In 2001, the publishing company Reed Elsevier acquired Harcourt General and Harcourt, Inc. In 2007, the U.S. Schools Education and Trade Publishing parts of Harcourt Education were sold by Reed Elsevier to Houghton Mifflin Riverdeep Group. The Harcourt name ceased being used separately in 2008.
