Biography"He came to the Daily News in 1928 as a sports writer and became the paper’s star columnist with 'The Powerhouse.' Powers campaigned to make `hit' and `error' signs fixtures at baseball parks and called for the introduction of plastic batting helmets. The Daily News said Powers is also believed to be the first sports columnist to urge that blacks be admitted to the major leagues. In the early 1950s, Powers became one of sports’ first crossover media figures when he joined television. He announced NBC’s `Gillette Friday Night Fights' and worked as a sportscaster for WPIX, while he continued his work at the Daily News....Powers was born in Cleveland, the eldest of 10 children.
