St. Louis Browns Baby Brownies certificate and letter
Date1952 June 16
DescriptionA certificate and letter mailed in June 1952 to the parents of Richard Alan Goughenour. Bill Veeck, president of the St. Louis Browns had a publicity promotion that any baby borne May 30, 1952, would receive a certificate which gave them an invitation to Spring Training in March 1970 for a tryout. The certificate has illustrated headshots and one full length of the team's mascot, with black hair and red skin, at the bottom left and a ribbon with the mascot's head on it. The top reads, "St. Louis Brown Baby Brownies Future Player's Contract." It has the name "Richard Alan Goughenour of St. Louisland" and reads that it certifies he is a member of the sub-junior affiliates of the St. Louis Browns, as as a member in good standing who will be expected to report for spring training March first, 1970. It is dated June 16, 1952 and signed by Bill Veeck. The accompanying letter is typed on St. Louis Browns letterhead. It reads "To 'The-Rookie-of-the-Year,' 1970," and below it reads "You couldn't have picked a better spot in all the U.S.A., Our welcome to St. Louis, son, we send without delay." The second paragraph states if you can't use these tickets for any game at all, we'd be pleased to have your parents when the umpire cries "Play Ball." The bottom is congratulations and is signed by Bill Veeck. The versos (not shown) are both blank. These were enclosed in a St. Louis Browns envelope, addressed to "Baby Goughenour" and postmarked June 17, 1952.
