The caption on the back (not shown) reads, "Organizer of the Knickerbocker Baseball Club, first baseball organization. Cartwright was instrumental in expansion of the game rules which were edited and preserved by Henry Chadwick. Cartwright joined the Gold Rush in '49, carrying baseball to the Pacific Coast and later to Hawaii."
