Letter from A. C. Buckenberger to Zane Grey and Team photograph

Datecirca 1898, 1902
DescriptionA handwritten letter from A. C. Buckenberger to P. Z. [Pearl Zane] Grey, January 13, 1902. The letter is written on "Boston Base Ball Association, National League" letterhead written at the top of the page in black script. Below and to the left are the names of the team president, A. H. Soden, treasurer J. B. Billings, and manager Buckenberger. To the right, the word Boston is scratched out and above it, it reads "Syracuse, NY, Jan. 13th, 1902." Buckenberger tells Grey that he was informed that he would not be playing for the Orange Athletic Club and if he could be induced into playing professional base ball. Buckenberger writes that he would like to hear from him and what his current terms are. It is signed "Yours, A. C. Berkenberger." The verso (not shown) is blank. It includes the original envelope with "A. C. Buckenberger, Manager" stamped in black in the top left corner, a two cent red stamp, and addressed to "Dr. P. Z. Grey, New York City, #100 W. 74 St." It is postmarked "Syracuse, NY, Jan. 13, 1902, 4PM." Donated with the letter, is an 7.5 x 10, black-and-white team photo of the Orange Athletic Club, circa 1898, with Zane Grey seated in the middle row on the far right. It is unrelated to the letter.
Bio/Historical NoteJohn Thorn, MLB historian, wrote an article on this letter and photo in 2018. He dated the photo as circa 1898.
