The inside of the canvas is a rubber bladder that through age has fused together. At the bottom of the helmet is an air hole for manually inflating the head protector. Board lining is curved on four sides with a piece of string on both top and bottom for attaching to the head protector.
Bio/Historical NoteFirst patented batter's helmet manufactured by Reach in 1905 as the Pneumatic Head Protector. According to research, it is not believed that any professional player used this style helmet until 1907 when Roger Bresnahan was knocked unconscious by a pitch and when he returned to the game six months later he wore the Pneumatic Head Protector.
