DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of a sign commemorating the former baseball field Bedford St. Grounds in Fall River, Massachusetts. The sign has a white background with black letters printed on it. The sign is bolted against a brick wall. The sign reads," NAPOLEON LAJOIE BEDFORD ST. GROUNDS AT THIS LOCATION FORMERLY STOOD A BALLPARK CALLED THE BEDFORD ST. GROUNDS ALL-TIME GREAT 'NAP' LAJOIE MADE HIS OFFICIAL DEBUT IN ORGANIZED PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL HERE ON MAY 1, 1896 WITH FALL RIVER OF THE NEW ENGLAND LEAGUE. HE WENT ON TO A BRILLIANT 21 YEAR CAREER AND WAS ELECTED TO THE NATIONAL BASEBALL HALL OF FAME IN 1937. THE FIRST 2ND BASEMEN TO RECEIVE THE HONOR. LAJOIE DIED IN 1959. HE WAS 84. DEDICATED MAY 1, 1996." Based on when the plaque was dedicated and when the image was donated to the Museum, the photograph was taken in either 1996 or 1997.
