TrannscriptionJ.F. Lamping Jr. #3705 Brodview Drive East Hyde Park Cincinnati Ohio n'y 8/35 My Dear Nephew, I was pleased to get your nice letter and will try now to answer some of those questions first while I was about your age and living in small town in Illinois. I loved to play ball and started as the catcher of our boys club the (Modoc's) played every chance I got and nearly always as catcher. We had no mask or gloves those days to wear and while up closed to the bat, one day I got hit on the nose by foul tip which about ended my career as a catcher. after that I started playing 2nd base. I was about 17 when I got my first professional engagement with the Davenport Iowa club I was there 2 seasons. Played 2nd with Akron Ohio team in 1881 - Then was signed to play with the Red's in 1882 I was 22 yrs old at that time. Joey you have picked about the hardest position in the infield to play, but with a good arm plenty of practice and experience no reason why you should not make good. If you like to play the hot corner best I would say stick there. Get on some school or other team of your age thats the way we all get started then play when you can that will give you the experience. I am sending you a couple of clippings from St Louis Sporting News a Baseball paper that should interest you. Will close now with love to all and best wishes for a Happy New Year.
