Bio/Historical NoteCap worn by Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Gift Ngoepe on April 26, 2017 when he made his major league debut against the Chicago Cubs. With this debut it was said that Ngoepe became the first player born in Africa to appear in a major league game. However, further research has developed that Alfredo Cabrera - a Cuban shortstop and native of the Canary Islands, an archipelago off the coast of Morocco belonging to Spain but technically part of the African continent - appeared briefly for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1913. Cabrera went 0 for 2 in his one game in the National League so Ngoepe, who singled in his first bat, does have the distinction of being the first player born in Africa to get a hit in the big leagues. Furthermore, Ngoepe became the first player born in South Africa to appear in a major league game.
