Brooks Robinson Sliding to Third photograph

DescriptionA black-and-white full-length action photograph of Brooks Robinson sliding to third base. Robinson, identifiable by the number 5 on the reverse of his Baltimore Orioles road jersey, makes contact with Reno Bertoia while sliding. Sliding on his right hip, with both legs extended straight, Robinson holds his bent left arm against his side while placing his right hand on the baseline for support. Robinson looks forward and to Bertoia. Bertoia, wearing a Kansas City Athletics home uniform, kneels on his right knee while reaching forward and down to Robinson with his gloved left hand. Bertoia raises his bent right arm shoulder height on his right side while looking down and to his right. Standing behind both players is umpire Bill McKinley. In the photograph, the ball can be seen just above and to the left of Bertoia's cap. The parallel orange lines visible on the surface of the photograph are not original and exist as modifications made for publication, indicating where the photograph is to be cropped. Pasted on the reverse (not shown) is a clipping of the published newspaper caption for this photograph that reads, "BOBBLE-Brooks Robinson, of Orioles, slides into third base as throw-in from outfield get by A's Reno Bertoia at Kansas City Wednesday night. Bill McKinley watches." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in purple ink, is the date, "JUN 30 1961."
