DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Mel Ott of the New York Giants captured walking across home plate after hitting a home run on September 11, 1940 in game one of a double header against the St. Louis Cardinals. Ott is dressed in a New York Giants home uniform. In the background, an unidentified umpire is surrounded by unidentified St. Louis Cardinal players and catcher who appear to be arguing with him. The Cardinal players are dressed in St. Louis Cardinals road uniforms. A newspaper caption is affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) and states, "Mel Ott of the N.Y. Giants crossing home plate as he scored on his home run, hit in the 9th inning of the first game of a Giant-Cardinal double header in New York Sept. 11th. Card players may be seen [...] with umpire about play, but hit was a[...] Cards took both games, 7-4 and 3-2." This game was played at the Polo Grounds in New York, N.Y.
