Babe Ruth Gravesite photograph

Date1949 December 05
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Babe Ruth's grave. The caption (not shown) reads "From a snowy knoll in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Pleasant-ville, N.Y., deep in the rolling hills of Westchester County has [...]risen the above last monument to the great Babe Ruth. It is a massive, though simple memorial, yet few of the speeding cars over the express highways near the cemetary are aware it is there. The main figure in the design is the nine-foot relief of The Christus holding his hand on the shoulder of a small boy. The simple identification of the family plot is the name Ruth at the base. To the right is 'George Herman Ruth, 1895-1948.' It was on Aug. 16 of last year the immortal ballplayer finally found relief from pain. The only embellishment on the simple stone is a direct quotation from a eulogy of the star by Francis Cardinal Spellman which reads 'May the Divine Spirit that animated Babe Ruth to win the crucial game of life inspire the youth of America!' The monument is a comfort to hosts who deplored its lack more than a year the Babe had been laid to rest."
