Babe Ruth Playing Football photograph
Dateundated
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Babe Ruth holding a football and wearing a football uniform. The caption (not shown) reads "George Herman "Babe" Ruth, "Sultan of Swat," wearing the unfamiliar--for him--habiliments of the gridiron, and holding in his hand the oval for which each year, and for alma mater of course, many collarbones, legs, arms and a few skulls are broken. Emulating the Melancholy Dane, the Babe, could soliloquize something after this fashion, "Alas, what fate that casts me in the role of swatter; with thin bludgeon and small and solid pill as tools. What pitcher could throw them wide to make me weary with hiking, if such a pill as this was the ball? What bat could be so thin and frail to miss this object floating o'er the plate? Alas, indeed!" Babe donned the garb of the gridiron athlete and worked out with the squad of Drake University. However, Coach Solem, passed him by as a prospect. His ankles are too thin, quoth Solem."
