Babe Ruth Memorial Plaque photograph

Date1952 August 27
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Babe Ruth Memorial. The caption (not shown) reads "James Gravesande (left), 19, and Dominico Quandt, 18, two scholarship winners from the Netherlands West Indies, study a plaque honoring the baseball immortal Babe Ruth in centerfield at Yankee Stadium today, where they saw their first major league baseball game. The two boys--never before away from home--arrived in New York from Aruba, N.W.I., yesterday for a sightseeing tour before beginning a year's study at Allentown, Pa., Vocational High School, after winning the all-expense scholarship awarded annually in Aruba by Lago Oil & Transport Company Limited, affiliate of Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. They were chosen among 88 students. After a year's study in Allentown, they will be offered employment at Lago's Aruba refinery--world's largest oil refinery now in operation."
