BiographyGene Lamont was a catcher for the Detroit Tigers (1970-1972, 1974-1975). After his playing career, "he went on to serve as a Pittsburgh Pirates coach under skipper Jim Leyland from 1986 to 1991.After managing the Chicago White Sox from 1992 to 1995, he returned to the Pirates coaching staff in 1996. In 1997, he replaced Leyland as the team's skipper, a position he held through 2000.
Lamont spent 2001 as a Boston Red Sox coach and was a member of the Houston Astros coaching staff for the next three seasons, from 2002 to 2004. In 2005, he managed the AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons, and in 2006 he rejoined the Tigers as a third base coach where he was reunited with his mentor, Jim Leyland. He stayed as a coach in various capacities with the Tigers until the end of the 2017 season. In 2018, he joined the Kansas City Royals organization as a special assistant to General Manager Dayton Moore.
