BiographyGene Carney began writing baseball in 1989 and became known through newsletters, numerous essays, and three books. He was active in the Society for American Baseball Research, founding the local chapter in Utica, NY. Beginning in 1993, Carney wrote a semi-regular column called “Notes From The Shadows of Cooperstown”. At first, Carney’s self-published “Notes” was an eclectic blend of essays, poetry, book reviews, and a little baseball history. Then, in September 2002, it took on a singular focus: the Black Sox Scandal and he later became the founder and chairman of SABR’s Black Sox Scandal Research Committee. He also wrote four books.--sabr.org.
