Charlie Gehringer photograph

Date1934 April 20
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Charlie Gehringer captured warming up his swing before going up to bat on the sidelines of the baseball field. The Detroit Tigers played against the Cleveland Indians and won 4-0 when the Tigers scored every single one of their runs in the ninth inning. Gehringer has a serious expression on his face as he pulls the bat through over his right shoulder and his left foot twists in the dirt. An unidentified first baseman is visible on the field. Gehringer is dressed in the Detroit Tigers road uniform. League Park stadium is visible in the background and numerous baseball fans fill the seats. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph and states, "Scoring all their runs in the ninth inning, the Detroit Tigers bested the Cleveland Indians, 4 to 0, today in a duel between two southpaw hurlers. Carl Fisher, winning hurler, held the tribe to five hits. Lloyd Brown, on the slab for the Indians, breezed along easily until the ninth. Then Goselin opened with a walk and was safe at second when he beat Brown's throw on Walker's sacrifice. Greenberg also sacrificed and with Walker on second and Goselin on third, Doljack was purposely passed, filling the bases." Based on the newspaper clipping this photograph was taken on April 20, 1934.
