Charlie Gehringer and Chuck Mead photograph
Date1952 August 15
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Charlie Gehringer captured giving batting pointers to a young baseball player Chuck Mead. Gehringer is looking down at the positioning of Mead's hands as he has his own left hand on the upper portion on the bat. Gehringer is dressed in the Detroit Tigers road uniform. Mead is also looking down at his hands on the bat. Mead is dressed in the sandlot team's uniform. An unidentified stadium is visible in the background. A caption on the back of the photograph reads, "Co-manager Charles Gehringer showing Chuck Mead, shortstop from Chicago a few pointers on holding bat." Based on the caption on the back of the photograph and Gehringer's time as a manger this photograph was taken on August 15, 1952 at the annual Hearst Sandlot Classic. The photographer is identified by a single name, Gottesman.
Bio/Historical Note"The Hearst Sandlot Classic was a youth All-Star game (age 16-18) played annually in New York City from 1946 through 1965. It was originally known as the Hearst Diamond Pennant Series. Hearst newspapers in 12 cities from Boston, MA to San Francisco, CA selected players for the United States All-Stars. They were matched up against the New York Journal-American All-Stars, a team selected from tryouts in the city's sandlot program." -- baseball-reference.com
