DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Mel Ott of the New York Giants captured sliding towards home plate as the Pittsburgh Pirates catcher, Al Lopez, tags him out. Ott looks as though he is bracing for the impact of the collision he is about to have with Lopez. Lopez has his hat on backwards, scrambling as he tags Ott out and clouds of dirt rise around them. Ott is dressed in a New York Giants home uniform and Lopez is dressed in a Pittsburgh Pirates road uniform. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) and states, "Mel Ott, Giant Manager, is tagged out at home by Al Lopez in the eighth inning of the first game of a Giant Pittsburgh double header in the Polo Grounds, New York, June 27. Ott attempted to score on an infield grounder. Giants won opener 10-4."
