Mel Ott photograph
Dateprobably 1942
DescriptionA black-and-white, head and shoulders photograph of Mel Ott. Ott is against a wall and has his head turned slightly towards to his right. He has a tight lipped smile and is captured looking up. Ott is dressed in a New York Giants home uniform. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) and states, "Mel Ott, former National League baseball star, died today after emergency surgery. He was 49. The one-time New York Giants' player-manager was admitted to Tuoro Infirmary here yesterday. He and his wife were critically injured in a two-car collision near Bay St. Louis. Miss., Friday night. Hospital spokesmen attributed death to uremia, kidney damage, multiple fractures of both legs and lacerations. His wife, Mildred, is in a Gulfport (Miss.) hospital, where she is expected to undergo surgery shortly. The hospital said Mr. Ott Died at 1:35 p.m. New York Time." Based on Ott's uniform, his time with the Giants, and a date stamped on the reverse (also not shown), this photograph was probably taken in 1942.
