DescriptionWhite leather baseball with red and blue stitching and blue stamps, including a "Reach" logo and "Official / American League Ball." There are several handwritten inscriptions including "Won from Detroit 10 to 0 August 23, 1920 / First Game pitched after hitting Chapman on Aug 16th 1920." The ball is signed on a side panel, "Carl W. Mays", and also on the sweet spot, "Babe Ruth."
Bio/Historical NoteBaseball used by Carl Mays of the New York Yankees on August 23, 1920, the first game after he struck Cleveland Indians batter Ray Chapman with a pitch on August 16, 1920. Chapman later died from the injuries. Baseball is autographed by Carl Mays and Babe Ruth. The Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers, 10-0.
