Bio/Historical NoteBaseball thrown by Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals for his 3,000th career strikeout on July 17, 1974 in the second inning at Busch Stadium, striking out Cesar Geronimo of the Cincinnati Reds. Cincinnati won the game 6-4. Gibson was the first National League player to achieve this feat as Walter Johnson had already reached the 3,000th career strikeout mark for the American League.
