Colgan's Chips poster
Datecirca 1911
DescriptionA color poster printed in green, red, and white advertising Colgan's Chips with an illustration of Honus Wagner. This poster features the phrase, "Ball Player's Picture in every package" to the left of Wagner's image in white. "Colgan's Chips / Violet or Mint," also in white, is at the bottom of the poster with a picture of the chip tin to the left. This portion is mounted on red matting that is visible on the left side of the poster. The matting is overlaid 45 individual Colgan's Chips portraits. Colgan's Chips were little disc-shaped pieces of gum issued in round containers and the cards included inside of the packages were also round. The discs measure approximately 1 1/2″ in diameter and feature black and white portraits of players. Each card had the player's name and team printed around his picture and the backs contain an advertisement for Colgan's Chips products. This poster features 45 of these individual chips.
Bio/Historical NoteFrom 1909-13, Colgan's Chips produced three separate baseball card sets classified as E254 and E270 by Jefferson Burdick in his American Card Catalog. They were originally issued as a bonus incentive inside small nickel tins of gum sold by Colgan's.
