DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Gene Autry and the Los Angeles Angels riding bicycles to their spring training site in Palm Springs, California on February 21, 1962. A caption on the back reads: "Baseball Pedal-Pushers--Co-Owner Gene Autry (right foreground) of the Los Angeles Angels leads the American League squad from its Palm Springs hotel to the ball park two miles away as the players headed for their first spring workout Feb. 21. General Manager Fred Haney had ruled the bikes would help condition players' legs. At extreme left is field manager Bill Rigney, who went to the ball park in a car. In left foreground is outfielder Leon Wagner." A newspaper clipping on the back provides a different caption, reading: "Los Angeles overseers have removed Angels' wings and put them on bicycles for movements between lodgings and training camp at Palm Springs, Calif. Manager Bill Rigney stands at left with baseball bat (intended use not divulged)! Co-owner Gene Autry, who used to right a horse, is at right."
