Ban Johnson Portrait photograph

Date1960 January 27
DescriptionA black-and-white portrait photograph of Ban Johnson. Johnson, shown from the chest up, wears a suit, tie, vest, and glasses. Johnson does not establish eye contact with the camera but rather looks at a point to the right of the camera. Johnson's torso is turned slightly to his right, away from the camera. Visible in the background behind Johnson are portions of a man's suit. Based on these included background details and the close cropping of the image this portrait of Johnson was extracted from a larger group photograph. The gray painted background behind Johnson's head and the portions of Johnson's suit jacket and tie that have been extended are modifications made to the original image for publication. Similarly, the orange lines on the surface of the photo indicate where this photo is to be cropped upon publication. Pasted on the reverse (not shown), typed in black ink, is a clipping of the original newspaper caption for this image that reads, "A.L. Started Fight for Life 60 Years Ago This Friday (The American League is sixty years old this week. This is the first of three articles telling the story of the beginning.) By Tommy Holmes Joe Cronin and his asso-ciates are fully entitled to foregather Friday for the purpose of slicing themselves a cake. They have an anni-versay to celebrate-the 60th birthday of the American League. Herald Tribune-UPI BAN JOHNSON A.L. founder." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in black ink is copyright information regarding United Press International Photo. Stamped twice on the reverse (not shown), in purple ink is the word "DEAD," as well, also in purple ink, the date "JAN 27 1960," the probable publication date of this image.
