Tris Speaker Portrait photograph
Date1926 December 22
DescriptionA 3/4 profile black-and-white portrait photograph of Tris Speaker. Speaker, shown from the chest up, wears a suit and bow tie. Posed with his right shoulder angled slightly away from the camera, Speaker looks forward, directing his gaze to a point to the right of the camera. In the bottom right corner of the photograph, a sticker that reads, "UNDERWOOD & UNDERWOOD. INC. WASHINGTON," is visible. Pasted on the reverse (not shown), a caption, typed in black ink, reads, "TRIS SPEAKER INVOLVED IN BASEBALL SCANDAL 58876 RU An especially posed portrait of Tris Speaker, former manager of the Cleveland Indians and one of the most famous figures in baseball, who has just been named in the baseball scandal expose by Judge K.M. Landis. SLUG--TRIS SPEAKER DECEMBER 22, 1926." On the other copy of this photograph, several facial features and portions of Speaker's clothing have been enhanced to appear more legible upon publication. In this image, the perpendicular lines on the surface of the photograph are not original and indicate where the image is to be cropped upon publication. In the lower right of this frame, handwritten in black, is the phrase, "u. & u," corresponding to the sticker in the lower right corner of the larger image that reads, "UNDERWOOD AND UNDERWOOD," indicating the photographer. Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in purple ink, is the date, "DEC 24 1926."
