DescriptionA black-and-white posed portrait photograph of Ban Johnson. Shown from the waist up, Johnson is seated behind a granite topped table. Johnson's left hand rests on his lap, hidden behind the desk, in his right hand that rests on top of the table is a gavel. Johnson, wearing a suit, tie, and vest faces the camera straight on, establishing eye contact. The white markings visible around the subject's face are not original and exist as a system of notation to indicate where the photo is to be cropped for publication. Visible in the background is an upright piano and hanging curtain. In the lower left-hand corner there is white lettering that reads, "UNDERWOOD & UNDERWOOD, INC. WASHINGTON." Pasted on the reverse (not shown), typed in black ink is a caption that reads, "53696 RU Ban B. Johnson,President of the American League, photographed presiding at the annual meeting of the owners of American League teams, in session in Washington. SLUG--BAN JOHNSON FEBRUARY 10,1926." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in blue ink, is copyright information regarding Underwood & Underwood as well as the dates "RECEIVED FEB 11 1926" and " LAST TIME USED JUL 1 1927," the multiple publication dates of this image.
