Babe, Helen, and Dorothy Ruth photograph

Date1923 February 15
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Babe Ruth with Helen and Dorothy Ruth. The caption (not shown) reads "Babe Ruth began the Great 1923 Come Back yesterday. Tossing a dozens bats, a couple of gross of league baseballs, a satchel full of gloves, spiked shoes and other baseball paraphernalia to say nothing of his sticks, on the 4.50 train at the Pennsylvania Station, the Big Hitter gave Mrs. Babe and Baby Dorothy a kiss apiece and began the long trip to Hot Springs on the first leg of the season of preparation of swatting. There was a crowd at the station. Half a dozen newspaper men accompanied the Babe who will pick up Wally Schlang and Mike McNally at Philadelphia and will meet Carl Mays and Everett Scott and perhaps Joe Bush and Sam Jones at points along the route or at the Springs. Bob Shawkey doesn't go until Sunday. "No fooling this year. I'm out to make good," said the Babe as he stepped on board the train and waved goodby. Hot Springs is just a on the campaign. There to take the baths and light exercise until March 4- the real training will be done at New Orleans from March 6 to April 1. On April 1 the Yankees will begin their annual pilgrimage north with the Brooklyn Robins, and those battles will give the finishing touches to the preparation for the opening of the new Yankee Stadium on April 18. By that time we should know whether the Babe is going to hit those long, long smashes again."
