DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Monte Irvin sliding into third base. The image caption on the reverse (not shown) reads, "A Triple to Tie. New York: Monte Irvin slides into third base on his stomach for a triple which sent Don Mueller across the plate to give the Giants a 2-2 tie with the Pittsburgh Pirates in the eighth inning at the Polo Grounds, Sept. 10. The hit went sailing over outfielder Ralph Kiner's head and by the time the ball got to third baseman Sonny Senerchia, Umpire Bill Engeln had called Irvin safe. The Giants won the game in the 13th inning, 3-2."
