Lefty O'Doul and Joe DiMaggio Posing in Japan photograph
Date1951 October 27
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Francis Joseph "Frank" "Lefty" O'Doul posing with Joseph "Joe" DiMaggio and an unidentified female representative of Japan in a full-length portrait. O'Doul forces a smile at the camera. O'Doul stands with his leg shoulder-width apart holding a large bouquet of flowers a ribbon featuring Japanese characters on it. O'Doul most likely wears a San Francisco Seals uniform without a cap. To the left, the unidentified Japanese woman wears a long white dress with a white dress coat, a white necklace of unknown material, and a white dress hat. She smiles and stares toward the right presumably to another photographer. Left of her stands DiMaggio who looks in O'Doul's direction. DiMaggio's stands with more weight on his left leg than his right and his arms solemnly behind his back. DiMaggio wears an away New York Yankees uniform. The three stand in a stadium on the third-base line of the infield with unidentified Japanese players standing with the backs to the camera along the first-base line. In the background, the stadium is filled to capacity. On the reverse (not shown), there is a caption stating, "FLOWERS FOR LEFTY JOE DIMAGGIO (LEFT) LOOKS OVER AT FRANCIS "LEFTY" O'DOUL, SAN FRANCISCO SEALS MANAGER, WHO HOLDS FLOWERS PRESENTED BY JAPANESE GIRL BEFORE GAME IN TOKYO BETWEEN AMERICAN BASEBALL STARS AND YOMIURI GIANTS. O'DOUL MANAGED THE AMERICAN PLAYERS IN GAME PLAYED AT KORAKUEN STADIUM. GIRL IS NOT IDENTIFIED."
