Nellie Fox and Hank Bauer Action photograph
Date1956 May 17
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Nellie Fox and Hank Bauer. Fox is captured leaping in the air to avoid colliding with Bauer who slid to second base. A cloud of dust is rising around Bauer. Fox is dressed in a Chicago White Sox home uniform and Bauer is dressed in a New York Yankees road uniform. The caption on the front of the photograph (not shown) states, "Hank Bauer, Yankees outfielder (#9) is forced at second base in the 4th inning of the New York-Chicago White Sox game her 5/17. Gil McDougald grounded to Luis Aparicio at shortstop who threw to Nellie Fox for the force (above). The relay to Ron Jackson was too late to get McDougald. Yanks won, 10-3." A caption on the back of the photograph (also not shown) states, "Nervous Nellie: Nelson Fox of the White Sox had to leap high to get away from Hank Bauer of Yanks in fourth inning yesterday. Bauer was a forceout but Fox' toss was too late to get Gil McDougald for double play." Based on the captions and Fox's time with the White Sox, this photograph was taken on May 17, 1956.
