Pumpsie Green photograph

DescriptionA sheet containing three black-and-white photographs of Pumpsie Green in a Red Sox away uniform, taken during his major league debut on July 21, 1959. Two of the photos show Green batting while the third shows Green fielding. The first photo (left) shows the left handed Green at the end of his swing, feet wide apart, and his bat almost behind his body. Green is looking up, watching the flight of a fly ball. The second photo (middle) shows Green beginning to run to first base after making contact with a pitch that would result in a ground out. Green is running aimed at first base as he holds his bat in his right hand after finishing his swing. Green can be seen watching the path of the ball. The third photo (right) shows Green making a defensive play near second base. Green has just released an off balance throw towards first base while he was still moving. The date and descriptions of the action were provided by an accompanying caption. The caption below the photographs (not shown) reads: "CHICAGO, July 22--PUMPSIE GREEN, BOSTON'S FIRST NEGRO PLAYER, IN ACTION--Elijah (Pumpsie) Green, making his first major league start for Boston Red Sox, is pictured at bat and afield in game with White Sox today. Green, who has been farmed out to Minneapolis, is the first Negro to play for Boston. Left, he watches a foul pop-up; center. he runs to first, but was thrown out; and right, he throws out Nelson Fox."
