Sandy Koufax with a Bandaged Finger photograph

Date1962 July 29
DescriptionA black-and-white, head-and-shoulders photograph of Sandy Koufax. Koufax is looking directly into the camera, smiling, and holding up a baseball with his left hand. One of his fingers is bandaged. The caption on the side of the photograph reads, "7/29/62 - Los Angeles: Bandaged finger of injured Dodger pitching star Sandy Koufax shows as he prepared to throw a baseball for the first time in two weeks, 7/28. The lefthander hurled the ball lightly for about 10 minutes while playing "pepper" ball shortly before the Dodgers-Giants game. Stricken with a blood supply diminution in the index finger, the Dodger team physician had estimated that Koufax would not be able to throw a ball for at least four and possibly six weeks, but fast response to treatment allowed the Dodger ace to throw the ball after only two weeks." Another caption on the reverse (not shown) reads, "Ailing Member - Dodger pitching star Sandy Koufax, prepares to throw a ball for the first time since he injured his finger two weeks ago. The team physician had estimated the Dodger ace might be out of action for six weeks, but fast response to treatment allowed Sandy to play "pepper" this weekend." According to the caption, the photograph was taken on July 29, 1962.
