DescriptionA black-and-white, head and shoulder, photograph of Charlie Gehringer captured seated at a desk reviewing his calendar. Gehringer is looking out of the corner of his eye and has the calendar visible as he points to the 11th of May. He is dressed in a suit and has a small smile on his face. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the side of the photograph and states, "The 'X' Charley Gehringer (above) is marking on the calendar indicates the last May 11 he expects to see in major league competition-- his 38th birthday. The Detroit Tiger veteran, regarded as one of baseball's greatest second basemen, believes it will be his last year 'if I can get through it.'" Based on the newspaper clipping this photograph was taken on May 10, 1941.
