DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Cap Anson throwing out the first pitch at a Cub's game. A typed image caption on the reverse (not shown) reads, "He helped make baseball the great American game. Adrian Constantine ("Cap") Anson, who managed the old Chicago White Stockings before they became the Cubs, pictured at the old west side park about twenty years ago. Anson began to play ball in 1871, and in the succeeding quarter of a century set a record as first base-man which has never been excelled. (Burke & Koretke Photo)." An additional caption also the reverse (not shown) reads, "America's baseball hero for half a century. The late Capt. Adrian C. ("Pop") Anson, who managed the many-times victorious Chicago White Stockings before they became the Cubs. He began to play ball in 1871 in Rockford, Ill., coming to Chicago in '75 to play first base with the White Stockings, which he led to National League pennant victories in '76. '80, '81, and '82. Capt. Anson is shown after his retirement throwing the first ball at a Cubs' game at the old west side park twenty-seven years ago."
