Bio/Historical NoteTrophy bat awarded by Chicago fans to Pittsburgh's Abner Dalrymple on May 6, 1887, to commemorate his National League-leading .354 batting average of 1878 (while he was with Milwaukee). The presentation occurred in his first game back in Chicago after he had been sold to Pittsburgh in November of 1886. The bat was presented to Dalrymple by fans of "Section A" the first time he came to bat. Date on the bat reads "May 5, 1887" because the presentation was supposed to have taken place on that date, but the game was rained out.
