Herkimer County Champion Base Ball trophy bat

DescriptionDark brown stain wooden bat, 61.5 ounces, with 12 sterling silver bands around the barrel and a sterling silver portion around the handle. Bands around the barrel are decorated to mimic belts and are engraved with many different regional team names, scores and dates. Band around the handle is engraved "Herkimer Co. Champion Base Ball Bat / Contributed By W.P. Whitney & Seward Merry."
Bio/Historical NoteThe Champion Base Ball Bat of Herkimer Co., NY, was awarded in the late 1860s to the best amateur teams in the upstate county. Silver straps, fashioned to look like belts, are engraved with the teams, date and score for each game.
