Shown from the rear, identifiable by the last name and number 19 on the reverse of his jersey, Gwynn wears a San Diego Padres road uniform, batting gloves, and helmet. Gwynn stands with his left foot on base, and his right on the baseline. Resting his right arm down by his side, Gwynn, with helmet in hand, raises his left hand over his head, in a salute to the crowd, having just completed his 2,999th hit. St. Louis Cardinals' shortstop Edgar Renteria is visible to the right of Gwynn. To the left is most probably the Cardinals' second baseman and the second base umpire. On the mound is Cardinals pitcher Manny Aybar and at home plate is the next San Diego batter, the Cardinals catcher, and an umpire. Captured in-game, an occupied stadium is visible in the background.
