DescriptionA composite color photograph of Tony Gwynn. Celebrating his 3,000th hit, this image is comprised of six different photographs of Gwynn in uniform throughout his career. The oldest, seen in the upper left corner, is a 3/4 length photograph of Gwynn in his batting stance. Wearing a San Diego Padres road uniform, helmet, and batting gloves, Gwynn looks forward, in the direction of the oncoming ball. Placing his left hand over right on the grip of the bat, Gwynn holds the bat above his left shoulder, angled backwards. Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by Gwynn, this image was captured between 1982, his first year with the team, and 1984, the final year San Diego wore solid-color jerseys and two-color hats. The 3/4 length image that occupies the center of the composite photograph depicts Gwynn entering into his follow through position. Wearing a San Diego road uniform, helmet, and batting gloves, Gwynn supports his weight between his straight, front right leg, and his bent, back left leg. Looking forward and down, Gwynn places his left hand over right on the grip of the bat, holding it straight, out in front of his body, waist height. Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by Gwynn, this image was captured between 1995, when San Diego introduced orange lettering to their road uniforms, and 2001, his final year with the team. The full-length image in the upper right of the photograph shows Gwynn in his follow through position, preparing to run to first. Wearing a San Diego Padres alternate uniform, with his bent, front right leg lifted slightly off the ground, Gwynn is captured mid-step. Supporting his weight on his bent, left back leg, Gwynn adopts a modified lunge position. Placing left hand over right on the grip of the bat, Gwynn holds the bat chest height, on his right side. Gwynn looks forward and to his left. Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by Gwynn, and the 'swinging friar' patch visible on the left sleeve of his jersey, this image was captured during the 1997 or 1998 season. The half-length image in the bottom left corner of the photograph depicts Gwynn from the waist up, wearing a San Diego Padres road uniform, batting gloves, and baseball cap. Looking forward, Gwynn establishes eye contact with the camera. Placing left hand over right on the grip of the bat, Gwynn holds the bat chest height, resting it against his left shoulder. Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by Gwynn, this image was captured between 1985, when San Diego introduced road uniforms that featured their team logo, and 1989, when they retired this style. The 3/4 length image seen in the bottom center of the photograph depicts Gwynn running. Wearing a San Diego Padres alternate uniform, Gwynn looks to his left, directing his gaze to a point in the distance and to the right of the camera. Captured mid-step, Gwynn's right leg is in front of left. With his left arm bent, held chest height in front of his body, Gwynn extends his left arm, that is also bent, out to his side. Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by Gwynn, and the 'swinging friar' patch visible on the left sleeve of his jersey, this image was captured during the 1997 or 1998 season. The posed portrait photograph of Gwynn, seen in the bottom right of the composite photograph, depicts Gwynn from the waist up, wearing a San Diego Padres home jersey and baseball cap. Shown in 3/4 profile, Gwynn's left shoulder is angled slightly away from the camera. Looking forward, smiling, Gwynn establishes eye contact with the camera. Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by Gwynn, this image was captured between 1991, when San Diego introduced pinstripe uniforms with blue and orange lettering, but without piping, and 1994, when they retired this style. Visible along the upper border of the photograph is a phrase that reads, "3000 hits tony gwynn august 6, 1999." In the lower right corner of the photograph is a San Diego Padres 1991 logo. In the lower left, visible on the surface of the photograph is a gold circular authentication sticker, indicating that this photograph is numbered, "4138/5000." Based on the date that Gwynn broke this record, this image was created after August 6, 1999, in celebration of his achievement.
