Ty Cobb photograph

Date1951 July
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Ty Cobb sitting at a desk or table with a pair of glasses in his left hand. His right hand is gesturing in the air while he looks off to the left, beyond the camera. Newspaper markings are around his head. The image caption on the reverse (not shown) reads, "Ty Cobb, the 'Georgia Peach' and one of baseball's immortal, is shown as he took the stand today before a house monopoly subcommittee as first probe of organized baseball got underway. Cause of the hearings is to determine whether baseball is violating the anti-monopoly laws, also, whether it should be exempted from the provisions. Cobb made a spirit defense of...by maintaining the game is primarily a sport instead of a business. He denied that organized baseball is in any way monopolistic and stated that 'baseball is a great force in our country."
