Babe Ruth and Children photograph

Date1935 June
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Babe Ruth getting out of a car with children waiting for him. The caption (not shown) reads "New York...Babe Ruth. Once mightiest of sluggers of our national pastime, has laid down his bat, perhaps for all time. The story of his severance from the roster of the Boston Braves has been duly recorded: this picture shows his return to his home here. As he alighted from his car at the doorway of the apartment dwelling wherein he resides, a small group of children served as his reception committee. It was a somber occasion, lacking in the usual bluff heartiness that has in the past characterized the mighty Babe and his most loyal fans." There is a stamp on the back that reads "received Jun 4 -1935", suggesting this was taken in early June.
