Babe Ruth and Connie Mack photograph

Date1934 October 01
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Babe Ruth and Connie Mack. The caption (not shown) reads "Ruth to succeed Connie Mack as Athletics mentor. Connie Mack (left), manager of the Philadelphia Athletics, and Babe Ruth, pictured aboard the liner empress of Japan, en route to Japan, where the American League All-Star team, managed by the Bambino will play an exhibition tour. Yesterday, manager Jake Ruppert of the Yankees and Connie Mack confirmed rumors that Ruth would succeed the latter." An additional copy of this photograph has a caption (not shown) that reads "latest reports have it that Babe Ruth will succeed Connie Mack as manager of the Philadelphia Athletics, although officials of the New York Yankees deny them. The two great baseball figures are shown when they sailed for the orient recently on a barnstorming trip. It is further reported that if Connie Mack retires, Col. Jacob Ruppert, owner of the Yankees, will not stand in Ruth's way if he is offered the managership of the Athletics."
